HOW CLEANPLAY WORKS
A movie is more than a file. There’s dialogue to understand, timing to get right, and context behind every scene. Here’s how CleanPlay brings those pieces together.

01 / IMPORT YOUR COLLECTION
Add a movie, a folder, an external drive, or a network share. CleanPlay discovers the video files and brings them into a visual library, with movies, TV seasons, and film series in one place.
macOS gives CleanPlay access to the locations you choose. The library remembers those sources, so you can return to your collection without adding every file again.
CleanPlay uses your own video files. Movies and shows shown here are for demonstration only and are not included with the software.
02 / IDENTIFY THE TITLE AND THE FILE
CleanPlay uses information such as the filename, title, and year to identify a movie and retrieve matching artwork and details. Series and episode information help put longer stories in order. When a match is ambiguous, it can ask you to choose the right title.
Knowing the title is only part of the job. A theatrical cut and an extended cut can have different dialogue and timing. CleanPlay keeps track of the physical file and checks compatibility before sharing preparation across versions.

A content fingerprint helps saved preparation follow the same movie across renames and drive remounts.
Edition and runtime checks help keep a different cut from inheriting the wrong mute or skip times.
03 / PROCESS THE AUDIO
A subtitle tells you what was said. CleanPlay also needs to know when it was spoken, so a mute can cover the word you want to remove.
CleanPlay checks the selected audio language and looks for suitable embedded or local subtitles. It can help find matching internet subtitles when needed. On-device speech recognition supplies dialogue and timing when subtitles are unavailable, and helps check what the audio actually contains.
Subtitle timing can be early, late, or gradually drift. CleanPlay compares subtitle words with a word-timed transcript, using matched phrases as anchors. This helps account for offsets, drift, and local differences between a subtitle file and your movie.
Detected profanity becomes a set of timed mute windows. Local timing checks refine the spoken start and end points. Uncertain results remain available for review, and Audio Review lets you hear the original, preview the mute, and adjust it.
A useful measure, with a clear meaning. Subtitle profanity coverage describes the loaded subtitle’s flagged words that have been matched to speech and covered by enabled mutes. It is not a guarantee that every spoken word has been detected.
04 / ANALYZE THE SCENES
CleanPlay runs custom vision models on your Mac through Apple’s Core ML framework. The analysis looks for visual content such as nudity, sexual activity, violence, gore, and frightening imagery.
The progress view shows the work in flight: the current stage, AI workers, in-file progress, and estimated time remaining. Processing can adapt to playback, memory pressure, battery use, and heat.
05 / REVIEW AND PERSONALIZE
AI can miss a moment or misread its meaning. CleanPlay makes its findings reviewable, so you can decide how your movie should play.
Each of 14 visual categories has five levels: Allow, Review, Standard, Cautious, and Maximum. Different kinds of content can have different settings.
Preview a suggested scene, change its boundaries, keep it, or choose to skip it. Add your own scene ranges when you want more control. Audio Review separately lets you adjust or exclude individual profanity mutes.
Scene evidence is saved separately from your profile. Changing scene preferences can use the existing analysis without starting the whole scan again.
06 / BRING IT ALL TOGETHER
CleanPlay brings the movie, synchronized audio mutes, scene ranges, and your viewing choices into one playback experience. During playback, selected profanity windows are muted and selected scenes are skipped.
Preparation and your adjustments are saved with the title, ready for another viewing. The Library shows preparation status, while Cinema View gives the movie room to breathe.
Planning a trip or a movie night? Prepare the titles beforehand, review the details, and return when you’re ready to watch.
BUILT AROUND YOUR MAC
CleanPlay’s speech and scene analysis runs locally. Your movies do not need to be sent to an online AI model for processing, and that processing does not require paid, per-token model calls.
Apple’s frameworks make it possible to run specialized models on your own hardware. That supports a simple ownership model: you pay once for CleanPlay, with no subscription.
Some features still use a connection, including title and artwork lookups, optional internet subtitle searches, and access to files on a network drive. On-device processing refers to the audio and scene analysis.
THE NEXT MOVIE NIGHT IS IN THE MAKING.
